Courtney: Hi I’m Courtney Uncooked, here with my dear friend and hairapist, Chynel Denson. She does my hair and makeup…

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: And nails and Chynel, is there anything you don’t do?

Chynel: Vajacials.

Courtney: Okay…

 Chynel: I don’t do that.

Courtney: Okay so you won’t do that.

Chynel: Right.

Courtney: But you won’t do that. Okay. So yeah, you can see I’m really excited.

 Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: About this body butter here.

 Chynel: Okay.

Courtney: But I love Chynel because you know, she’s really been through a lot. Very recently she lost both her brother and her son’s father. They both got killed and Chynel, it would’ve been very easy for her to use those things as an excuse…

Chynel: Yeah.

Courtney: To not, you know, achieve greatness. And instead, I think that she really turned those events around into motivation, and you’re only 28 years old…

Chynel: I am.

Courtney: And you have your own beauty studio…

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: And everyone loves you and you’re just a great person. I’m just really thankful to have you as my friend and hairapist for life.

Chynel: Thank you. You’re welcome.

Courtney: And you’re welcome. And so Chynel, you know, has her own line of beauty products that you make. They’re amazing. And you have some boutiques and some gift stores online.

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: So, you do lots of stuff.

Chynel: Yes. All over the place.

Courtney: How do you have the energy?

Chynel:  You know what? I honestly, I don’t know. I do not know. It’s just like a thing where once I put a plan together, I have to execute it. So that’s where we’re at, yeah.

Courtney: Well, you execute beautifully.

Chynel: Thank you.

Courtney: So Chynel is going to show us her famous basic body butter…

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: Recipe today. And this is so easy. You’re going to probably have most of the ingredients at your house, except for the Shea butter. I did have to go to a specialty store for that, but Chynel, why should we make our own lotions and body butters?

Chynel: You want to make your own lotions and body butters because it’s important to know what’s going into your products, what you’re putting on your skin.

Courtney: Right. Today, we’re going to be empowered and we’re going to make our own body butter.

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: And I’ll tell you what, with the holidays coming as well, this is a great gift.

Chynel: It is.

Courtney: Especially for the person who has everything. I mean, people love handmade gifts. Nothing says I love you like I made this for you.

Chynel: Absolutely. And then the weather. The weather how it takes a toll on your skin, you definitely want to have something that’s going to hydrate your skin, especially in these times so…

Courtney: Oh yes. And some people I’ve seen have horribly cracky hands and they use this basic body butter and it just is amazing.

Chynel: Yes. It’s best for the toughest areas on your body. So, your elbows, your knee caps, and your feet this is where this body butter is going to make you very happy.

Courtney: All right. So, we’re just going to get started.

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: We’ve got one cup of raw shea butter, which is the one ingredient that I had to find that I didn’t already have at my house.

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: And so, you know, since we’re Courtney Uncooked, we just melted our shea butter in some hot water, half a cup of coconut oil and I’m acting like I’ve done this before, but I’ve never done this.

Chynel: No, you’re doing it right.

Courtney: So, a half a cup of coconut oil.

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: And then a half a cup of olive oil.

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: All right. So, I mixed them all together. Is that pretty good for now?

Chynel: No, it needs to melt completely.

Courtney: Oh, okay. This needs to completely melt?

Chynel: Yeah. And it’s going to take a few seconds for the coconut oil to kind of just warm-up.

Courtney: Okay, yeah. I see these chunks.

Chynel: Yeah.

Courtney: So, all that’s got to go?  Ok Hey Chynel?

 Chynel: Hey.

Courtney: What do you call someone who steals lotion?

Chynel: I don’t know.

Courtney: A smooth criminal.

Chynel: Okay.

Courtney: Okay, I think I got it. Okay, it’s all melted.

 Chynel: Yeah.

Courtney: That didn’t take any time at all, hardly.

 Chynel: No, two minutes.

Courtney: Like a minute or, yeah. So now we’re going to take this…

Chynel: We’re going to put it into our freezer.

Courtney: We’re going to put it in the freezer.

Chynel: Not the refrigerator. You’re going to put it in the freezer.

Courtney: Going to put it in the freezer. All right.

Chynel: You need it to solidify just a little bit.

Courtney: Okay. All right. We’re back. We let our three oils solidify…

 Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: In their freezer for 45 minutes so now it’s like hard, it’s one consistency, and what do we do now?

Chynel: We’re going to whip it…

 Courtney: Whip it?

 Chynel: Whip it.

Courtney: Whip it good, all right. So, we’re going to whip it with a hand mixer, which I don’t have a hand mixer so I’m excited…

Chynel: Yeah, and if you don’t…

Courtney: To see this.

Chynel: If you don’t have a hand mixer, I mean, you can put it in one of those automatic mixers…

Courtney: Okay.

Chynel: But if you do that, you don’t want it to be really, really hard.

Courtney: Okay.

Chynel: Otherwise, you’ll burn your mixer out.

Courtney: Okay. So, a hand mixer is preferable.

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: Okay. And you got to really get down in it. Ooh, that looks fun. Can I do it?

Chynel: Yep.

Courtney: I mean, this is no joke. It’s harder than I thought it was gonna be.

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: Oh. Okay, take it back.

Chynel: So, you really just want to focus in one area until it’s whipped out…

Courtney: So, you don’t want to pick it up and move it…

Chynel: No.

Courtney: You just plow through…

Chynel: Right.

Courtney: With the hand mixer, you plow through it. Okay.

Chynel: And as you whip, it will start to change to a lighter color.

Courtney: Okay. Look at that. That’s magic.

Chynel: It really is.

Courtney:  I’m glad you’re showing me how to do this because I would have messed this up.

Chynel: It can get messy.

Courtney: It smells really good. And one of the last things you do is put five to 10 drops of essential oil, whichever one is your favorite. I love Joy by Young Living. My friend, Rachel Kemp actually gave this to me. So, I’m going to make some joyous body butter today and I’m excited. Great Christmas gift. We’re like Santa’s elves right now.

Chynel: Pretty much.

Courtney: Making our own Christmas gifts. With just olive oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, just those three things and you’ve got delicious body butter. And Chynel?

Chynel: Yes?

Courtney: Tell me, how much olive oil do you think Snoop Dogg puts in his body butter?

Chynel: I don’t know. How much?

Courtney: Just a drizzle, my nizzle.

Chynel: Fa shizzle. Oh my gosh.

Courtney: Okay, let’s just give this a go. Oh, heavenly, heavenly body butter. I’m making Chynel do all the work.

Chynel: Yeah I am.

Courtney: The thing kind of stresses me out, but the good news is you only have to make this like once a year because my sister-in-law Margaret made me some years ago and I still have it so you don’t have to do this often.

Chynel: If you’re giving it as a gift, you want to make sure it actually looks presentable. You want to put it into the jar and do the perimeter first.

Courtney: Ah, so smooth.  I love your shampoo, your conditioner, your hair mask…

Chynel: Yes.

Courtney: Everything’s just awesome. And what is your website?

Chynel: Www.chapter28, that’s 2 8 beauty.com.

Courtney: Chapter28beauty.com. I feel so empowered right now.

Chynel: Do you?

Courtney: Yeah. No more chemicals for me, no more going to the beauty store. I’m just going to make my own…

Chynel: Really, you can.

Courtney: Body butter. Ready to give it a try?

Chynel: It smells really good too.-

Courtney: That is so good. That is so good. I just… look at me. I made my own body butter.

Chynel: You did.

Courtney: You helped a little but…

Chynel: Well.

Courtney: My mom is going to be so proud. That’s awesome.

Chynel: Yeah.

Courtney Rapping:

Courtney: Making basic body butter with my girl Chynel. I love the texture and the way it smells. It’s made from a few things that you might have at your house.

Chynel: Yup.

Courtney: Your skin will look so good that you’re sure to attract a spouse. The best part is I made it all by myself, well Chynel helped a little…

Chynel: I did.Courtney: She’s like one of Santa’s elves. No, you don’t need a stove or an oven to cook, just a blender, dehydrator, and Courtney Uncooked. And Chynel.
